CA Regain MCWeeney Trophy

CA Regain MCWeeney Trophy

The CAI team (Nathaniel Healy, Jane Morrison, Sandy Greig, Gerard Osborne Burke, Alan Looney and Dave McGrath) came up short in their attempt to win the McWeeney for the third time in succession in their annual match against the English CA.

The host club was Hamptworth in Wiltshire, where the match was also played 2 years ago, where the hospitality was splendid - the local pub serves five different draught ciders -  and between Richard Stevens and Richard Dixon  all the visitors were accommodated. The croquet was more difficult, however and CAI were never ahead. Saturday's play started with Doubles and by lunchtime we were 2-1 down. The two rounds of Singles in the afternoon saw us down 8-7 at close of play, so hope was not lost.

Sunday, however saw a poor Irish performance, with all 3 singles games lost in the morning and a division of honours in the afternoon meant that the CA emerged the winner by 14-10. This result means that each team has won the Trophy 16 times since the event was first held. We look forward to regaining it at Carrickmines next year.
